Wow. Prompted by your post I just read the whole article by Proulx, on the Guardian website. An author of fiction decrying the way movies are evaluated strikes me as somewhat ludicrous. It reminds me of that oft-attributed quote "writing about music is like dancing about architecture". The arts do not align.

But mostly I think it's sad that a woman who has garnered so much acclaim in her own right has placed her self-esteem in the hands of others so whole-heartedly. Why should she care if the academy liked Crash more than Brokeback? It's kind of off-putting, really. I find myself inclined to defend the Oscars, which I personally do not care for.
